Symbols Woven in Tradition
Every motif in Angami textiles is a piece of poetry. These patterns are not random designs they are stories of warriors, harvests, and unity, woven with discipline and devotion.
The Language of Motifs
Motifs like Lohe (diamond), Pesii (zigzag), and Thipi (stripe) represent protection, continuity, and life’s journey. The colours have meanings too red stands for courage, black for strength, and white for peace.
Cultural Significance in Weaving
Each shawl worn during festivals or ceremonies carries identity. Men’s shawls often reflect social status, while women’s textiles showcase marital symbols or clan heritage.

Passing Down Symbolism
Motif knowledge is inherited, not taught in classrooms. Weavers in Kigwema memorize patterns through observation and muscle memory, making every textile unique yet consistent with heritage.
In a single fabric, the Angamis have managed to weave their philosophy that beauty is in meaning, not luxury.
