Journey Begins: Shillong to Nagaland
Our adventure started from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong, Meghalaya. We traveled 98 km by bus to Guwahati Railway Station in Assam, followed by a six-hour train journey covering 291 km to Dimapur, Nagaland. The final leg was a scenic 70 km drive to Kigwema village, taking around two hours.
We stayed at Dawn Homestay, soaking in the local culture and scenic landscapes.
Discovering the Angami Weavers
A short walk from our stay brought us to the heart of Kigwema village, where we met the skilled artisans of the Angami tribe. They demonstrated the ancient backstrap loom weaving, a craft passed down through generations. Each textile told a story of heritage, culture, and pride.
Empowering Artisans Through Digital Reach
Our conversations with the weavers highlighted their need for marketing, storytelling, and e-commerce support. Connecting these artisans to online platforms can expand their reach, promote sustainable fashion, and help preserve their traditional craft for global audiences.
Supporting these handmade textiles not only preserves a rich cultural legacy but also drives sales and global appreciation for tribal artistry.
